Use Zoom’s core technology to power innovative video-based solutions for any use case

This year’s Zoomtopia was all about Exploring New Dimensions, and who better to do that than developers? After all, you’re building these new dimensions, and we want to help. That’s why we held our first-ever Developer Summit today. Thank you to all who joined!

Featuring more than 20 sessions, we covered everything from new products and features to real-world examples of how developers and Zoom partners are using our APIs and SDKs to build their own apps & solutions. We hope you left feeling inspired by your fellow devs and what they’re building!

Here’s a rundown of some of today’s announcements.

New partnerships and features to help you build

We want to continue enabling you to create solutions across any number of use cases and industries, which is why we’re prioritizing the openness and flexibility of our developer platform. And we understand that building the infrastructure to scale those solutions can be challenging. The outcomes of our new collaborations and features will help you mitigate those concerns and continue to innovate.

Build on top of Amazon Web Services from within Zoom Meetings

Our developer platform needs to work seamlessly with other best-in-class service providers and technology vendors to help you bring your own solutions to market. This is why we’re expanding our work with Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Developers go to great lengths to capture raw audio and video from Zoom Meetings for downstream live audio and video analysis. We saw an opportunity to optimize and simplify streaming participant audio and video to AWS artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and analytics services, providing richer in-meeting experiences.

Together with AWS, we’ve developed a cost-effective approach that helps reduce development friction and offers more capabilities. You can build an end-to-end solution using a containerized Zoom Meeting SDK with AWS data streaming and AI/ML services. A use case for building together: Palo Alto Networks

Remote communication is the new normal. With so many employees using Zoom at home and in hybrid work environments, IT teams are focused on ensuring a great user experience. There was considerable demand from IT & network admins for actionable data, and we responded with the recent launch of our Quality of Service Subscription (QSS). QSS provides details about network traffic in near real-time for every user, host, and participant in all meetings, webinars, and phone calls.

Palo Alto Networks was inspired to take QSS one step further, applying it to their own use case by integrating Zoom QSS data points into their network management product. Palo Alto Networks customers can now easily incorporate our QSS data into their existing infrastructure, providing seamless access to workload insights and better network transparency.

For developers and IT teams at large organizations in particular, QSS and our Palo Alto Networks integration is a game-changer.

Video SDK for Linux

Our Video SDK lets you build powerful solutions centered around Zoom’s low-latency, high-quality video. With access to our raw HD video and audio technology and hallmark Zoom features, you can build native, engaging, and interactive experiences for your users. And we’re continuing to expand.

Use our upcoming Video SDK for Linux to extend what’s possible with your existing video SDK app on one of the best open-source platforms. Use cases include:

  • Using a drone that runs embedded Linux to have real-time video and audio capabilities and the ability to livestream what it “sees” to YouTube. You can even let someone else control it remotely through the command channel.
  • Running a “virtual participant” in a Video SDK session from a Linux container running in the cloud.
  • Providing extended AI/ML capability to a Video SDK session, like smart note-taking or sales coaching.

Our Video SDK for Linux will become available in Q1 2023, and we can’t wait to see what you build with it.

Zoom Developer Platform enhancements

The updates did not stop there – you asked, and we’re delivering.

  • Introducing admin-authorized apps: By the end of the year, we will enable admin-authorized apps. IT admins can pre-authorize apps for employees so they have the apps they need ready to go within their Zoom account. This means increased awareness and distribution of the apps and integrations you build using our developer solutions.
  • One build flow to rule them all: Available by the end of Q1 next year, our new build flow will simplify the app-building process, reduce engineering issues when introducing new features, and increase app adoption and discoverability of those new features. You’ll be able to create one app and give it access to different functionalities — so a user can install it once and use it across the Zoom product line.
  • Access Zoom Apps across our entire platform: Our vision for the Zoom Apps software development kit (SDK) is to enable you to extend your app across the entire Zoom product line. That’s why we’re expanding Zoom Apps across our platform to include Meetings, Webinars, Team Chat, Zoom Rooms, and more. Starting in Q1 2023, you’ll be able to use Zoom Apps to customize your office environment with apps for shared Zoom Rooms, controllers, kiosks, and Zoom Rooms Digital Signage.
  • Monetize your apps via our App Marketplace: For another opportunity to extend your business and customer bases, we’re working to allow you to monetize your apps on our App Marketplace. You’ll soon be able to choose from different pricing and usage models based on what works best for your business.

Spotlighting developers and Zoom partners

In addition to making those announcements, it was an honor to host some of our partners at the Developer Summit. They joined us to demonstrate how they use the developer platform to continue addressing their customers’ needs and grow their businesses by using our technology.

Tribe FitnessHackerRank, and Home Live each shared unique use cases for our Video SDK, ranging from interactive virtual workouts to remote-first interviewing web applications, to real estate virtual viewing solutions.

Current Health, a Zoom ISV partner, demonstrated how our Meeting SDK is used in both scheduled appointments and on ad-hoc calls by healthcare providers and patients.

Hermis helped attendees explore how Collaborate Mode and Guest Mode can be the key differentiators for their Zoom App. Welo reimagined event facilitation by using Zoom Apps for Webinars and breakout rooms. And Twine developers shared how they supercharged the power of breakout rooms with our Zoom Apps SDK.

Nylas shared their API platform, which is making it possible for developers to easily distribute Zoom Meetings and Webinar invite links, as well as Meeting SDK and Video SDK invite links to participants via the Nylas Email and Calendar APIs.

Last but not least, Prezi dove deep into the capabilities and best practices of the Layers API and shared how to build immersive applications for video presentations. Prezi leverages the Layers API to bring presentation content into the video feed right next to the user, so others on the call don’t have to look back and forth between the slides and the presenter.
